Tuesday, October 6th
Empower Yourself: Are you prepared for a 7.8 earthquake?
6:00 p.m. Margaret Vinci, Office Manager of Earthquake Programs at CalTech, will lead a revealing talk on what to expect from the next big quake in Los Angeles, and discuss earthquake preparedness and the upcoming October 15th Shake Out drill.
7:00 p.m. Mariana Amatullo, Co-founder and Director of Designmatters at Art Center College of Design, and author of the LA Earthquake Source Book, will present the short Preparedness Now. This film depicts the realistic outcome of a hypothetical, but plausible, magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the San Andreas Fault in Southern California.

Seismological and Engineering Aspects of the 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake
7:00 p.m. Dr. Jonathan Stewart, Ph.D., P.E, Professor and Vice Chair of the UCLA Civil & Environmental Engineering Department and Chief Editor of the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering led a group that performed reconnaissance in L’Aquila after the earthquake. He will provide a seismological and geological perspective on the L’Aquila earthquake, and why this information is important both for those in Italy but also for us in California.

Life After: A Journey Through L’Aquila After the Earthquake
6:00 p.m. Kit Miyamoto, M.S., S.E., President and C.E.O., of Miyamoto International will discuss findings from his reconnaissance mission to L’Aquila; and his dedication to developing awareness of advanced technological engineering solutions for earthquake-prone areas.
7:00 p.m. Alessio Zampaglione and Elena Acefalo, Architects at StudioAZA, and William Taylor, Director of LAIAD, will share “Cubes for Life,” structures that can be utilized and easily modified for multiple purposes in emergency situations.

SAKAI RETURNS TO LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles-based Japanese artist Katsuhisa Sakai has worked for decades in a wide variety of media, from drawing and sculpture to film and video. For the first time in over a third of a century, “Katsuhisa Sakai: Four Dimensions” brings together important examples of his work in time and space.

(Santa Monica, CA – September 2009) On September 12, 2009, Samuel Freeman will exhibit new work by California artists Jesse Simon and Jimi Gleason.
Jesse Simon creates wall reliefs with the tactile qualities of fine marble. In his latest work, Simon moves away from the larger, representative works of his previous solo shows at the gallery in 2007 and 2005. For our season opener Simon focuses instead on a more personal scale while abstracted forms emerge once again from his recycled medium. Snapped or broken surfboards are stripped of their fiberglass coating then, reshaped around the interior structure of foam and wood. Simon removes his medium so far from its original purpose that the viewer is often surprised to learn of the material history of his work.
“Drizzled in a slice of tart”, Jimi Gleason’s newest color-field abstractions take a lap through geometry. Moving away from the monochromatic works of past seasons, Gleason’s brushwork now spans split fields of color and multiple surfaces. The delicious canvases still glow and change throughout the day but now demand their own seat at the table. As described by the Los Angeles times in 2005, Gleason makes “abstracted mirages that play such pleasurable tricks on the eye you won’t mind being fooled by their elusiveness.” Each painting shivers and hums quietly, with an elegance of riches.

(August 2009 – Santa Monica, CA) Opening October 29, 2009, Samuel Freeman presents “Masami Teraoka: Works on Paper – 1960s to 1990s,” a month-long museum-level survey of works on paper including prints, original drawings, watercolors, fragments and studies.
Born in Japan, educated in Los Angeles, and currently residing in Hawaii, Masami Teraoka is a cultural outsider by circumstance, but as an artist who came of age during the 1960s he is a cultural observer by birthright. Teraoka’s career has been marked by pronounced moments of cultural critique: Ukiyo-e style visions of the American fast food empire invading Japan in the 1960s; the threat of AIDS and its accompanying specter of death in the 1970s and 1980s; exploration of globalization, environmental and gender issues in the 1990s; crises of conscience within modern politics, religion and sexuality in his current work. In each of these periods Teraoka’s work has invoked a profound opposition of forces: political vs. sexual; humiliation vs. titilation; technocracy vs. prophecy; consumerism vs. tradition.
“Masami Teraoka: Works on Paper – 1960s to 1990s” presents exceptional examples of Teraoka’s work from these periods, including the 31 Flavors Invading Japan, New Views of Mount Fuji, McDonalds Hamburger Invading Japan, Hanuama Bay and Snorkel Series. Teraoka last exhibited “The Cloisters Confession” at Samuel Freeman in April 2008.

Christopher Russell will exhibit in the Chapel Gallery. Russell employs photography, bookmaking, writing, drawing, and digital-media printmaking to illustrate his explorations of the darker side of the human psyche. Investigating, and sometimes fabricating, the reasons people live or behave outside of socially acceptable margins, his work offers visions of what many would deem dirty, broken, useless, or criminal. Through the lens of a present-day flâneur, viewers are made privy to Russell’s observant, analytical wanderings along the physical and emotional outskirts of society. Russell most recently exhibited at the Hammer Museum in early 2009.
